I can’t express how pleased I was with the efforts of all at GRETB to get the Car Maintenance course for Deaf men up and running. The positive response from the Deaf men, made it all worthwhile though.
This is the first course for Deaf men organised by GRETB in the West. I don’t know of a similar course anywhere in the country, and our organisation is nationwide.
Donal Walsh the Community Education Facilitator was so helpful in planning the course tutor and organising the interpreter. The tutor, was so keen to get the course right, that in a prep meeting, he had sought, he listening to my suggestions and took everything on board, form the room layout to how to pitch the content and work with an interpreter. The Deaf lads enthusiasm really was heartening. They arrived early, each week; a full class. This group they keep up and used it to keep in contact over Christmas period. The course has put together an important source of support for these men, themselves, as Deaf peers .
The lads were full of praise for Arthur the tutor .On the nights I went to check in, it was clear how comfortable he made them feel, he pitched the content perfectly. The learning the lads have gotten has got them so geared up to continue in more courses. Huge thanks to GRETB
